ANB Announces Task Force

Dr Dennis Furlong, President of Athletics New Brunswick (ANB), has announced today the formation of a “Development Task Force” which will put together a comprehensive plan to ensure the development of the sport of Athletics from 2007 to 2014. Significant infrastructure and financial investments are expected shortly with the staging of the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships in Athletics in Moncton. ANB’s goal is to maximise the opportunities provided by this major event, in order to provide lasting benefits for the youth of Atlantic Canada, New Brunswick, and Moncton.

Feb 25 2007 - Jessica Belliveau lowers the 800m record

Jessica Belliveau lowers the 800m record again

For the third time this season, Jessica Belliveau has lowered the Junior Women's Indoor 800m record. Competing at the New England Intercollegiate Championships, Jessica ran a 2:13.26 in the preliminary heats on Friday, then ran a 2:15.31 to finish 6th overall in the womens 800m. Jessica also anchored the University of Maine's 4x800m team which won the relay in a time of 9:10.13.

AUS Indoor Championship

The AUS Indoor Championship was held this weekend at CEPS on the UdeM campus in Moncton.

Two ANB athletes competed in this year's AUS Indoor Championship. Sara Miller set personal bests and gained team points for UdeM in each event she participated in, including: the womens long jump with a leap of 5.21m to finish 2nd, the womens triple jump with a hop, skip and jump of 10.91m to finish 2nd; and she finished 5th in the womens 60m with a time of 8.21 seconds. Jean-Marc Doiron of UdeM also gained team points in each of his events including; a 3rd place finish in the mens 600m with a time of 1:27.18 and a 4th place finish in the mens 1000m with a time of 2:41.11.

Four new meet records were established: Greg Hadley from St. FX set a new mark in the Men's Shot Put with a throw of 15.61m; Seth Taylor of Dalhousie established a new record in the Men's Weight Throw with a toss of 16.03m; the Dalhousie women lowered there own meet record in the 4x200m relay to 1:47.20; and in the women's 4x800m relay both the St. FX and Dalhousie team broke the previous record with Dalhousie claiming the new mark of 9:26.76.

ANB Athletes at NCAA Conference Championships

Several New Brunswick athletes are competing at NCAA conference championships this weekend.

Competing for the University of Maine Black Bears at the America East Conference championship, Allyson Howatt established NB Indoor Records in the Junior and Senior 200m events. Allyson set the record in the qualifying round with her time of 25.42 seconds and then returned the next day to finish 6th in the final with a time of 25.43 seconds. Allyson also competed in the 55m and anchored the 4x400m relay to a 6th place finish. Also competing for the University of Maine was Jessica Belliveau, who finished 4th in the 1000m with a time of 2:54.38. Jessica also anchored the 4x800m relay to a 3rd place finish. Michael LeBlanc competing for Syracuse University in the Big East Conference easily won his preliminary heat with the meet record time of 6.71 seconds. Mike will run in the 60m finals later today. Results are available minutes after each event completes. Good luck, Mike!

Athletics Canada -- Atlantic Region Head Coach (Based in Moncton)

Athletics Canada is searching for a full-time coach to design and coordinate the training and competition program based on a Team Atlantic concept.  The focus will be on increasing results for athletes and coaches from the Atlantic region for the 2009 Canada Games and 2010 World Junior Championships.  The ideal candidate will be minimally a fully certified level three coach who has the capabilities to communicate in both official languages with five or more progressive years of experience in Athletics.  You will also have national leading experience in a particular event discipline or group of events and ability to coordinate and lead activities across disciplines.

Two NB Indoor Records Set This Past Weekend

At the NB Indoor Championships, Alex Stuart reclaimed the Midget Boys 60m Hurdles Record. Alex beat Alexandre Doucette by .04s to claim the new record with a time of 10.43 seconds. The previous record was set by Matthew Davenport at the Gagetown Invitational last November.

Meanwhile, south of the border Jessica Belliveau lowered her own Junior 800m Record to 2:14.67. Jessica was competing for the University of Maine Black Bears at the St. Valentines Invitational in Boston.
