After a breathtaking year that included a Canadian record, a Diamond League appearance, and a bronze medal at the Canadian Championships/Olympic Trials, Genevieve Lalonde has checked another item off her list, become an Olympian. Although this is her first Olympics, Lalonde is no stronger to the world stage, having competed at the 2007 World Youth Championships, 2008 and 2009 World Cross Country Championships, 2010 World Junior Championships, 2012 NACAC U23 Championships, 2013 Jeux de la Francophonie, 2015 Pan American Games and World Championships. Gen becomes just the second female New Brunswicker to make the Olympic athletics team, the first being Diane Matheson-Clement who competed at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. Interestingly, Diane was also a native of Moncton and 30 years after her Olympic appearance, made another as a team manager for the 1984 Olympics. The last track and field Olympian to come from New Brunswick was Joel Bouregois, who competed at both the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Also of note is that Bourgeois is Lalonde's former coach and also competed in the 3000m steeplechase event.
Joining Lalonde will be Maria Bernard of Calgary and Erin Teschuk of Winnipeg, the latter of which also represented Canada at last year's World Championships alongside Lalonde. These three women will all be the first to ever represent the country in the event at the Olympics, the steeplechase event was only offered to women beginning in 2008, and at both the Beijing and London Olympics, Canada did not send any athlete to compete in the event.
Genvieve Lalonde is one of only two athletes named to the team from the Atlantic provinces, the other being marathoner Eric Gillis who also competed in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

These three athletes will be hoping to hit the Olympic standard of 8100 points. Also competing will be New Brunswick record holder Chris Robertson along with Pierre Landry, Alain Doucet, Jean-Luc Bastarache, and Troy Wilson. The decathlon will be the event to watch this weekend! Following the RJTW Provincials, the 2015 NB Legion Championships & ANB Performance Meet will take place over Saturday and Sunday at the Moncton 2010 Stadium. Athletes of all ages will be on hand to compete, but this meet is a requirement for athletes aged 14 to 17 looking for a spot to represent New Brunswick at this year’s Canadian Legion Youth Track & Field Championships. This year the Championships will take place in Ste Thérèse, Québec from August 5th - 7th. The Royal Canadian Track and Field program is a nationally sanctioned program culminating in a national track & field camp and national championship for Canadian youth between the ages of 14 and 17 in the current year. National and provincial athletic associations have described this program as one of the best in existence and some rate it as international calibre. Many of Canada’s top track and field athletes have competed in this event. Past Legion Championships have seen New Brunswick athletes excel in their events bringing home medals, results of their hard work and excellent performances. Expectations based on performances by New Brunswick young athletes to date set the stage for these National to again be a successful championship. Athletes to watch this weekend in Moncton include: - Last year's returning individual medalists Mickyle Welsh from ASEA who runs the 100 and 200m dashes respectively, Lexie Shannon from Fredericton who competes in both the Long Jump, and Triple Jump, Hannah Trites, also from Fredericton, will run the 1200m, and Laura Dickinson of ASEA who will run the 800m and 1500m. These young athletes are all looking to have great weekends. - Marie-Pier Cloutier of Saint John is having a record-breaking year, breaking her own 100m hurdles record nearly every time she steps on the track. She will also compete in the 100m and 200m dashes this weekend. - Jordan Henri of ASEA will compete in the 100m, 200m, and high jump and is having a great season so far. - Ryan Evans of Saint John is certainly making a name for himself in the track and field world, as he will compete in the 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, and the javelin this weekend. - Shelby MacIsaac of ASEA who recently broke the provincial records in the 100m, 200m, and high jump, will be competing this weekend in the high jump, 100m, and 200m. - The event to watch this weekend may very well be the girls 100m which will showcase Samantha Taylor of Fast Tracks, Veronique Omalosanga of ASEA, Marie-Pier Cloutier of SJTC, Abigail Davidson of Fredericton, and Joelle Leger of ASEA. This race could very well put 3 or 4 girls on standard for the Legion Championships. - Lexie Shannon (Long Jump and Triple Jump) and Pierre-Luc Mcgraw (Long Jump and High Jump) are the top ranked athletes in the field events, while Samuel Bourque of ASEA and Walker Campbell, unattached, are the highest ranked throwers in the competition competing in both the shot put and discus. This multi-competition weekend will be a must-see so make sure to come out to the Moncton Stadium for some great track and field action! “This meet is going to be great and very busy with so many athletes competing, and I think it will benefit the young up-and-comers to continue with our sport, being able to watch these high calibre athletes compete,” said Gabriel Leblanc, Technical Director of Athletics New Brunswick. Jul 6 2016 - Moncton will host last chance for Decathlon Olympic Hopeful this Saturday & Sunday
Taylor Stewart, from London, Ontario, will compete this Saturday and Sunday at the Moncton 2010 Stadium in hopes of qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics. He will be on familiar ground in this stadium where he won a bronze medal in the long jump at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships hosted in Moncton. Throwing it back to that day in Moncton six years ago, Taylor was competing in front of thousands of Canadians and on TV broadcasted live internationally. He was on his last jump of the competition, still not having jumped a medal-winning distance, but with the help from all of the fans and the support of the entire crowd at the stadium, Taylor jumped to a bronze medal on his final attempt! It was very inspirational to all Canadians, and he then became a national hero in the track and field world. That was when he realized he could make it as a world class athlete. But early last year, after not being content with the way his long jump career was going, he decided to switch paths and try an even greater challenge - the decathlon. Now, this weekend will be his last chance to qualify for the Rio Olympics in what is one of the most grueling events in Track and Field. James Turner, currently ranked 2nd in the country in the decathlon behind Olympian Damian Warner, will also take to the track this weekend in Moncton in hopes of hitting the Olympic standard. Originally from Kelowna BC, Turner attends the University of Toronto, and trains 3-4 hours each and every day working towards excellence and chasing his Olympic dreams. Pierce Lepage has a few accolades under his belt as well. As last year’s Junior National Champion AND the record holder in the Junior Decathlon, he also won this year’s RBC Training Ground in Toronto. He will be competing in Moncton as he also chases his dreams in hopes of joining Canada at the Olympics in Rio in August. Also competing in the decathlon this weekend are provincial record holder Chris Robertson of Moncton, Pierre Landry of Saint-Louis-de-Kent, Alain Doucet of Dieppe, and Jean-Luc Bastarache of Moncton, all representing the local track club, ASEA. As you can see, this is going to be a very exciting competition and you don’t want to miss it! Make sure to be at the Moncton Stadium Saturday AND Sunday to witness these high class athletes compete for a birth on the Olympic team. “We’re more than happy to have these incredible young men compete here in Moncton this weekend, and we wish them well on their Olympic journey. It will be the competition to see, and this level of high caliber athletes will be very inspirational to the younger athletes in the province. I’m very excited to watch as well and hopefully this can spark new-found desires for the up-and-coming athletes in New Brunswick!” – Gabriel Leblanc, Technical Director of Athletics New Brunswick. Jul 5 2016 - Jeux de l'Acadie highlights
Because of the wind and cold, only two athletes have managed to break records. The thrower Katelyn Milligan representing the delegation of Prince Edward Island in the 14-15years category has launched an incredible 11.29m beating the previous record of 10.78m set in 2013 by Sara-Ève Noël from Chaleur delegation. In the para division, Jacob LeBlanc from South-East has established a new mark at the Shot Put with a throw of 4.71m. Jacob also won the 100m wheelchair Sunday morning in front of Nicolas Legacy also from South-East. Several records may have not been beaten however, that did not stopped athletes from getting great performances. Allain-Olivier Sirois from Madawaska-Victoria fought to the end against Jérémie Cyr, South-East, at the high jump to finally win the competition with a jump of 1.68m. Allain-Olivier had tried 1.73m to beat the record of the Jeux de l’Acadie and was really close to achieve. As for distances, athletes from Chaleur stood out. Antoine Roy, 12-13years, finished in 2nd place in the 800m and 1200m. In the category 14-15years, Amy Poirier won the 800m in 2:37.29 and Miguel Caron won the 1200m in 3:54.69. On South-East side, François Richard won two gold medals with a good lead in the 800m and 1200m. In sprints, Mélanie Haché, Kent, win first place Saturday in the 200m with a 28s28 as 13s48 in the 100m the following day. Nicholas Beaulieu, Nova Scotia, also dominated the 100m and 200m in 12s15 and 25s20, respectively, in addition to getting a first place with his team of Nova Scotia in the 4x100m relay.
