Jul 4 2018 - Robertson and LeBlanc make history at National Championships

The Canadian Championships kicked off with a bang, and after two days of the competition behind us, New Brunswick athletes Chris Robertson and Jacob Leblanc have already had historical performances for New Brunswick at these Championships.

Chris Robertson of Moncton made history by claiming the Gold Medal in the Men’s Decathlon at the Canadian Championships and being the first ever New Brunswicker to achieve such a distinction. Not only did he bring home the gold medal and is now the Canadian Decathlon champion, but with such a performance, he broke his previous provincial record of 6828pts by more than 200pts finishing the Nationals Championships with a score of 7040. This score also helped him break the 4.10m Pole Vault barrier with his highest-clearing jump of 4.25m, becoming the new provincial record holder in Pole Vault as well.

Jacob Leblanc’s competition just begun, and with 4 events still to come he has already made New Brunswick history by being the first New Brunswick male wheelchair racer to ever medal at the National Championships. He is coming home with a bronze medal in the 100m with a time of 17.13, narrowly missing out on his own provincial record of 16.97. Jacob competes in the 400m & 1500m Thursday, and the 200m & 800m Friday.

Other performances by New Brunswickers at the Canadian Championships include:

- Ryan Evans who was competing as part of Team Canada in the Pan American Combined Events Cup finished his meet off in 6th place with 6204pts.

- James Brace finished 7th in the seated shot put with a throw of 6.68m.

- Sydney MacDonald finished 13th in the Senior Women’s Heptathlon with 4182pts.

- Sophie Black finished 9th in the U20 Heptathlon with 3766pts.

Day two summed up the Canadian Combined events Championships, while days 3,4 and 5 will see some of Canada’s best Track & Field athletes compete in both the Para Challenge and the Canadian Championships.

“This is a very exciting way to start off the Canadian Championships in Ottawa” says Gabriel LeBlanc, Executive Director of Athletics New Brunswick. “New Brunswick athletes are proving to shine amongst the best in the country, and I have no doubt that will continue on throughout the week in Ottawa”.
