New CIS-Level Track and Field Team to be Based at UNB Saint John
UNB will introduce a Varsity Reds track and field program in fall 2010, the first-ever such program to be based on the Saint John campus.
Like the other Varsity Reds programs based on the Fredericton campus, the track and field program will compete at the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) levels, which are the highest levels of varsity sport in Canada. Though based in Saint John, UNB students from Fredericton may also participate.“We have worked closely with the athletics directors on both of our campuses and members of the Saint John community to make this happen,” said John McLaughlin, outgoing president of UNB. “It's been a real partnership."
Dave Munro, director of athletics at UNBSJ, said the new program came to fruition after several months of talks with his counterpart in Fredericton, Kevin Dickie. "The idea of finding a sport or sports where both campuses can compete through the one team is very exciting," Munro said. "The fact that it's based in Saint John gives us a new credibility as a smaller campus." He added UNBSJ offered a promising base for the program as the Port City has a vibrant running community through the Saint John Track and Field Club and featured the soon-to-be refurbished Canada Games stadium on campus.
