Apr 16 2019 - In Memorium - LeRoy Washburn by Bill MacMackin & Marc Lalonde
It is with great regret and sorrow that we at Athletics New Brunswick and at Athletics Canada share the passing of LeRoy Washburn, one New Brunswick’s giant builders and ambassadors on so many fronts, in particular that of our sport of Athletics. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife and “life’s best friend” for 63 years, Loretta, to his large and extended family as well as to his many friends from across the New Brunswick and Canada in the sport of athletics.
His life story from a youngster of Blackville near Miramichi, to Phys. Ed. teacher in Oromocto, including thirty years as Saint Thomas University’s Athletics Director, 45 years as an active supporter of the Royal Legion and 8 years as a member of parliament, father of five children, grandfather of seven, and one great granddaughter is brilliantly summarized in his obituary.
Within the Sport of Athletics, LeRoy was actively engaged for over 60 years as an local and international official, trainer, coach, ANB president and director of the Canadian official standardization and improvement process. Over his career LeRoy officiated at numerous major national and international events, including the Olympic Games and was inducted to the Athletics Canada Hall of Fame in 2014 in the category of Builder (See picture). A more detailed account of this great New Brunswicker’s impact on our sport and on many athletes will be published shortly on the ANB website.
Visitation are Tuesday, April 16th, from 3 -7 pm at the Oromocto Funeral Home, 108 Winnebago Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 25 Loisville Street, Oromocto, on Wednesday, April 17th, 2019 at 11 am. Fr. Charles Udeh will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the LeRoy Washburn Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Thomas University (www.stu.ca/leroy) would be appreciated by the family.
