May 29 2019 - NBIAA Regionals Recap
This past weekend over 700 athletes from across the province competed at their respective NBIAA regionals in hopes to qualify for the NBIAA Track and Field Provincial Championships that will take place Saturday, June 1st at the Rexton Track.
Qualification regionals were held in both Rexton and Saint John to determine the top eight athletes in each event, from each region, who will compete in this weekend’s provincial championship. In the case of field events, a qualifying height was also required to advance.
While one of the first nice days of this year blessed Rexton on Saturday, that was not the case for Saint John on Sunday. Regardless, many notable performances were made and there is a spectacular group of athletes advancing to Provincials this coming weekend.
Some highlights include:Jordan Henri (Senior boys) of BMHS competing in the 100m and finishing with a time of 11.13. Jordan also competed in the 200m, unofficially breaking his own NBIAA record of 22.52 with a time of 22.38. Sadly, this time won’t count as records can only be set at provincial championships. Shelby MacIsaac (Junior girls) of RHS competing in the 100m, 200m, and 400m. She finished with times of 12.90, 26.66, and 58.63 respectively, while also unofficially breaking the NBIAA record in the 400m. Caroline Gagnon (Senior girls) of ODC competing in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.75 and the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:12.19. Caroline also competed in the Long Jump competition and finished with a best distance of 4.87m. Keirstan Hicks of Ecole Aux Quatre-Vents and Sara Grant of Tantramar (Both Junior Girls) competed in the high jump competition to finish their competitions at 1.50m and respective first/second-place finishes. Craig Thorne (Senior Boys) of KVHS competing in both 110m and 400m hurdle events finished with times of 14.23 and 1:04.18. Craig is set up nicely to beat the 110m and 400m hurdle records set by Clint Steeves in 2015 (15.58) and 2013 (56.97), with a legal wind permitting. Mitchell Kean (Senior Boys) of Leo Hayes ran an impressive time of 2:13.06 in the 800m.
