Jul 9 2019 - 46th Annual Canadian Masters Athletics Championships
Over the course of this past weekend, the 46th Annual Canadian Masters Athletics Championships were held in Ste-Thérèse, Québec. The meet was a three-day event that showcased some of Canada’s greatest Master Athletes. Our New Brunswick athletes had outstanding performances at the championships and represented the province very well. Some even broke old provincial records. Below is a recap of their accomplishments.
Paul Gauthier (Saint John Track Club) competed in the 50-54 age category and took on multiple events. In the Throws Pentathlon he came first, recording a final score of 3329. On top of this, he took on the Men’s Triple Jump where he broke a provincial record with a distance of 9.90m and finished first in the event. In the Discus Event he placed second with a throw of 40.01m, he won the Hammer Throw with a distance of 41.75m and also won Weight Throw with a distance of 15.01m. In the Men’s Long Jump, he placed third with a jump of 3.88m, he placed second in Javelin (37.68m) and won Shot Put with a score of 12.94m.
David Blackwood (Saint John Track Club) also took on multiple events. He competed in the Pentathlon and finished second with a score of 2504. He also threw 22.39m in the Men’s Discus Throw, placing him third. David raced in the 200m Run with a time of 35.50 (third overall), the 100m with a time of 16.58 (third overall) and the 1500m with a time of 7:21.53 (second overall). He won the Men’s Long Jump with a measurement of 3.46m and placed second in Javelin (30.63m). His performance in the Men’s Javelin earned him a new provincial record.
Bruce Rosvall (Saint John Track Club) had an excellent performance at the Canadian Master Athletics Championship in the 55-59 age division. He broke two provincial records, the first in the 400m Run (57.23) where he placed first overall, and the second in the 800m Run (2:15.17) placing second overall. Bruce also competed in the 200m Run with a time of 26.76; he won the gold in that event.
Dean Stowbridge (Saint John Track Club) also represented New Brunswick proudly at the meet. He raced in the 5000m with a time of 16:53.91 placing second overall.
Rob Jackson competed in the 60-64 10000m race. He took on extremely hot and humid conditions but still took home the gold, recording a time of 40:03.80.
Heather Leblanc took on an action-packed weekend. She competed in the Throws Pentathlon capturing first place with a score of 2364. She proceeded to win Women’s Discus in the 55-59 age category with a throw of 20.72m and the Weight Throw with a throw of 7.29m. She broke her old provincial record in Hammer Throw with a throw of 24.27, as well as her previous record with Javelin by throwing 18.21m. She won both these events. Finally, Heather won Shot Put with a score of 7.64m.
