Sep 25 2019 - History of New Brunswick Track & Field athletes at World Championships:

Welcome to Part 4 of our historical look at international performances by New Brunswick Track and Field athletes. This edition will focus on participation in World Track and Field Championships in various categories. These will include the World Championships (at the Senior or Olympic level), which began in Helsinki in 1983. They were initially held every four years until 1991, and then, as in today, every second year. The Worlds originally were born as the IAAF World Cup, 1977, Dusseldorf, West Germany, and gradually morphed into the World Championships of today. As this article is being posted on the ANB website this week, our own Gen Lalonde is competing in the 2019 Worlds, being hosted by Doha. Best of luck to her in the Steeple ! Also being reviewed here will be the World Juniors (U20), first held in 1986 in Athens, Greece;  the World Youth (U18), originally held in Bydgoszcz, Poland, in 1999;  the World University Games, also known as FISU, or World Student Games, or Summer Universiade; these Games began officially in 1959, and have been held generally every 2 years since then. Finally, we are also covering participation at the World Indoor Championships. As of today, we have had 14 athletes compete in some form of a World Track and Field Championship. An important note here: This topic of Worlds has been VERY challenging to collect all the accurate data for, and we may have missed someone’s history. We apologize in advance.  As always, we welcome your feedback, additions and corrections. Please contact me at  rodmackenzie24@gmail.comI’d love to hear from you and gather further information on our sport’s history. Thanks !
