Nov 27 2019 - ANB Hall of Fame Recap
This past Saturday, November 23rd 2019, ANB hosted its first Hall of Fame event with over 80 participants attending. The event took place at the new Irving Oil Field House in Saint John.
Seven panelists accepted to join us for a panel discussion on the Past, Present and Future of the Sport of Athletics viewed from their experiences, accounts and vision. Many members of the audience were attending the Athletics Canada SAGM in Saint John from the 21st to the 24th of November where many discussions were had in reviewing the Athletics Canada vision and mission as a first step towards a new 2021-2018 strategic plan. Because of this, the panel discussion at this HoF event was constructed in a way to offer diverse opinions on the state of athletics in our province and country.
Three of our HoF inductees, John Corazza, Joël Bourgeois and Hal Merrill, were on hand to share with us their past experiences in their athletic development and career as well as the advantages and challenges they faced. Derek Washburn gave a passionate speach about his father and one of our new Hof inductees in the builder category, the late LeRoy Washburn. We then examined the present as it is being lived by Jenn Brown and Kate Van Buskirk, both accomplished elite athletes and Athletics Canada Athlete Directors. Finally, we turned to Simon Nathan, Athletics Canada's High Performance Director and David Bedford, CEO of Athletics Canada, for their thoughts on the future of athletics in Canada.
Each HoF inductee was presented with an Athletics Canada sweater and ANB HoF Inductee pin. Their name and story will be added to the Hall of Fame section of the ANB website, as well as displayed in one of our province's track & field stadiums for all to see (details to be determined).
The evening concluded with socializing over food and drinks, and popping of balloons for our fundraiser event.
We would like to thank our gold sponsor Dr. Brown & Associates in conjunction with Alcon Dailies Total1, for which this event would not have been possible, as well as our participating sponsors Adams Green, Curry & Betts Chartered Professional Accountants, Benchmark Investment Consulting, McDonald's and Molson Coors.
