Athletics New Brunswick Athletes Shine at Canadian Championships with 12 Medals and Multiple Provincial Records
What a week for Athletics New Brunswick athletes at the 2026 Canadian Track & Field Championships in Ottawa, Ontario!
Competing against the best athletes in the country, New Brunswick athletes delivered one of the province's strongest performances on the national stage, bringing home 12 medals, setting multiple provincial records, and achieving international championship standards.
Leading the way was Craig Thorne, who returned to the top of the podium with a gold medal in the men's 110m hurdles in a time of 13.66. After injury prevented him from defending his national title last year, Craig's victory marked a tremendous comeback and a return to national championship form.
In the U20 women's distance events, Allison Wasson enjoyed a breakthrough championship, winning gold in the 1500m and silver in the 3000m. Her victory in the 1500m secured the World Athletics U20 Championships qualifying standard, putting her in position to represent Canada at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon this August. Allison also rewrote the Athletics New Brunswick record book, setting new provincial records in the U20, U23, and Open women's 3000m.
Dante Cormier continued his outstanding season with three medals, earning gold in the men's 400m wheelchair and silver medals in both the 100m and 800m events.
In the throws, Christel Robichaud captured silver medals in both the women's seated shot put and discus, while Audrée LeBlanc earned silver in the U20 women's shot put and bronze in the discus. Audrée's shot put performance established a new Athletics New Brunswick U20 record.
New Brunswick athletes also excelled in the relay events. The women's 4x400m relay team of Sophie Owens, Olivia Brown, Anna Somers, and Lillian MacVicar raced to a silver medal in the senior women's mixed club/branch relay. The men's team of Jack Mellish, Hayden McKinnon, Caden Wolverton, and Brodie Pennie matched that result, earning silver in the senior men's mixed club/branch relay.
The championships also saw another provincial record fall, as Sophie Owens ran 2:09.47 in the U20 women's 800m, establishing new Athletics New Brunswick records in both the U18 and U20 age categories.
