New Brunswick Athletes Shine at Canadian Masters Championships

New Brunswick was strongly represented by a small contingent at the Canadian Masters Championships, which took place in Laval, QC from July 31st to August 2nd. Representing our province was Kim Roberts (W60-64) of Aetos Athletica, Paul Gautier (M60-64) and Bruce Rosvall (M60-64) of Saint John Reds Track and Field Club, and David Blackwood (M75-79), Unattached. The quartet brought home 25 medals in total (12 gold, 9 silver, and 4 bronze).

Paul Gautier, competing in the M60-64 age category, won gold in the throws pentathlon with a total of 3670 points, breaking his own national record in the event (discus throw (44.52m), hammer throw (43.08m), javelin throw (32.55m), shot put (13.27m), and weight throw (17.04m)). He followed this up with gold medal wins in the hammer throw (42.13m), javelin throw (35.99m), shot put (13.31m), weight throw (17.84m), high jump (1.38m), and triple jump (7.45m), and silver medal wins in the 100m hurdles (22.36), discus throw (42.12m), and long jump (3.45m). Gautier’s performance in the high jump is also a new provincial record in the M60-64 age category.
“At 61, I’m still learning, still competing, and still finding out what I’m capable of,” said Gautier. Besides the successes of the weekend and the hardware earned, the friendships and memories made along the way as a masters athlete remain very important to Paul, and is one of the big draws to competing on the national stage alongside fellow masters athletes.

Kim Roberts, competing in the W60-64 age category, won gold in the 100m (16.15), 200m (34.66), and pole vault (1.68m). She additionally won silver in the long jump (3.38m), bronze in the hammer throw (23.11m), and placed 4th in the throws pentathlon with a personal best of 2267 points (discus throw (13.81m), hammer throw (24.52m), javelin throw (15.66m), shot put (6.49m), and weight throw (11.90m)). Participating in a W55-59 4x100m relay team alongside athletes from Ontario and Quebec, Roberts won an additional gold, as the team crossed the line in 1:02.68. Her performances in the 100m, 200m, and weight throw are all new provincial records in the W60-64 age category.
“To compete against some of the top athletes in my own age group from across the country and find my place among them is incredibly motivating,” said Roberts. Kim would like to see more masters athletes, especially women, become involved, and she relates that the camaraderie and encouragement on the track and field is one of the main reasons she attends these national events.

Bruce Rosvall, competing in the M60-65 age category, won silver medals in both the 200m (27.35) and 400m (1:00.46). His performance in the 200m is a new provincial record for the M60-65 age category.

David Blackwood, competing in the M75-79 age category, won seven medals in as many events. He won gold in the long jump (3.27m), silver in the discus throw (20.50m) and 400m (1:32.44), and bronze in the 100m (17.37), 200m (38.31), and javelin throw (21.75m). Finally, Blackwood earned silver in the pentathlon with 1611 points (200m (38.01), discus throw (17.21m), javelin throw (22.53m), long jump (3.32m), and 1500m (DNF)).
This championship closed out the 2026 outdoor season for our New Brunswick masters athletes. Congratulations to all on representing our province so well!
